Get Free QuoteHow Many Units Do You Need?
The right number depends on how many people, how long they are there, and whether it is an event or a job site. Job sites have a legal minimum. Events do not, but the industry has a standard we follow. Here is how we size both.
For Events
Weddings, festivals, graduations, family gatherings
Length matters as much as headcount. The same 50 guests need one unit for a four hour party and two for an all day event.
| Guests | Up to 4 hours | 5 hours or more |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 50 | 1 unit | 2 units |
| About 100 | 2 units | 2 units, 3 from 6 hours on |
| More than 100 | Call us with your headcount and hours | |
Then adjust. Add 20 to 30 percent if it will be 80 degrees or warmer, or if you are serving alcohol. People drink more and go more often, and a reception where everyone lines up at once is not the same as a county fair where use spreads across the day.
Handwashing goes by unit count, not guest count:
- 1 to 10 units: 1 hand wash station
- 11 to 20 units: 2 stations
- 21 to 30 units: 3 stations
- 31 to 40 units: 4 stations
- Over 40 units: 1 more station for every 10 units
Figures follow the PSAI Standards for Special Events. Past 100 guests the count moves quickly with event length, so we would rather size it with you than have you guess.
For Construction Job Sites
This one is not a suggestion, it is a regulation
| Number of employees | Minimum number of facilities |
|---|---|
| 20 or less | 1 |
| 20 or more | 1 toilet seat and 1 urinal per 40 workers |
| 200 or more | 1 toilet seat and 1 urinal per 50 workers |
- No sanitary sewer on site? The standard requires one of four options, and a chemical toilet is one of them, unless local code says otherwise. That is what we deliver.
- Temporary field conditions. Even then, the standard requires that not less than one toilet facility be available.
- Mobile crews. The requirement does not apply to crews that move site to site with transportation readily available to nearby toilets. OSHA has said "nearby" generally means less than 10 minutes away. If your route does not clear that, you need a unit on it.
- Weekly service. A unit nobody wants to walk into is the same as no unit. We service on a route so yours stays usable.
Running a field crew instead? Farm work follows a separate rule. Once 11 or more employees are doing hand labor in the field on a given day, the standard requires one toilet and one handwashing facility for every 20 employees or fraction of 20, within a quarter mile walk or at the closest point of vehicular access. We place field units across the fruit belt. Tell us the crew size.
Source: OSHA sanitation standard for construction, 29 CFR 1926.51(c), Table D-1, plus the OSHA interpretation letter of June 7, 2002 on mobile crews. Field sanitation comes from the agriculture standard, 29 CFR 1928.110. In Michigan this standard is enforced by MIOSHA and in Indiana by IOSHA, and both adopt the federal construction standards.
